No survival, no limits. Fly anywhere, grab any block, and build whatever your imagination can dream up.
Build a castle, a theme park, a floating island, or a pixel-art portrait of your favorite game. Share your builds with friends and let them see what you made.
Survival mode is about patience. You start with nothing, you need food and shelter, and every dangerous monster becomes easier once you have the right gear. This guide walks you through the basics, then shows you how to beat each boss in the game.
When you spawn, the sun will not stay up forever. Punch a few trees to collect wood, then craft a crafting table and a wooden pickaxe. Mine stone for a stone pickaxe and a stone sword. Look for a hillside or cave to dig into, and build a simple shelter with cobblestone or dirt. Close the entrance before dark so zombies and skeletons cannot reach you.
Your hunger bar drains over time, so food matters as much as safety. Kill cows, pigs, and chickens for meat, and cook it in a furnace for the best healing. Plant wheat, carrots, and potatoes near water so you have a steady supply. Build a small base close to resources like trees, water, and mineshafts, and add a chest to store your extra items.
Iron is the key to stronger tools and armor. Tunnel around layer 16 or lower and look for orange-speckled iron ore. Smelt it in a furnace into iron ingots, then craft an iron pickaxe, a shield, and iron armor. Diamonds are usually found deeper underground, near layer minus 59. Always bring a few torches, because dark caves are where most danger hides.
Build a portal frame with obsidian. Obsidian needs a diamond pickaxe to mine, so make sure you have one first. Light the portal with flint and steel. Inside the Nether, collect blaze rods from fortresses and ender pearls from endermen. Blaze powder and ender pearls let you craft Eyes of Ender, which point toward a stronghold. Stronghold rooms hold the portal that leads to The End.
Minecraft has three main dimensions. Each one has different terrain, mobs, and rules. The photos and descriptions below are loaded live from Wikipedia.
Loading dimensionsโฆ
The Elder Guardian lives inside ocean monuments. Its beam drains your mining speed, which is called Mining Fatigue. Bring water breathing potions and a sword, and defeat it quickly. Clear the monument for the sponges and gold that help you later.
The Wither has about 300 health and attacks with skulls that cause the Wither effect. Build it by placing four soul sand or soul soil blocks in a T shape, then stack three wither skulls on top. Wither skulls come from wither skeletons in the Nether. Fight it with strong armor and bow shots, and use splash potions of healing on yourself, since they harm the Wither.
The Warden lives in the Deep Dark biome, usually near ancient cities. It has about 500 health and cannot see you, so it tracks sound. Move by sneaking to stay quiet. If it spots you, it fires a sonic boom that ignores armor. Retreat, put distance between you, and fight it only with a strong sword and full armor.
The Ender Dragon has about 200 health and lives in The End. First, destroy the End Crystals on top of the obsidian pillars, because the crystals heal the dragon. Use bows or ender pearls to reach the crystals. Beds explode when used in The End, so do not sleep there. Once the dragon is weakened, hit it when it dives and then fly away from its breath attack. Defeating it unlocks the End portal exit and a dragon egg.
Enchanting makes your gear much stronger. Build an enchanting table using obsidian, diamonds, and a book, then surround it with bookshelves to unlock higher-level enchantments. Collect lapis lazuli from deep ore veins and use experience points from mining, smelting, and killing mobs. Brewing is just as useful. Build a brewing stand with blaze powder and a nether wart farm, then make healing, swiftness, and fire resistance potions. Fire resistance is especially helpful in the Nether and when fighting the Wither.
Each mob has a weakness. Skeletons are easier to fight at close range with a sword, but their arrows hurt at a distance, so block line of sight with walls. Creepers explode, so back away and strike when they are hit by your arrows or when you have space to retreat. Endermen only attack when you look at them, so avoid eye contact or wear a carved pumpkin as a helmet. Zombies and spiders are slow, so you can fight them safely with a shield raised. Always keep your health high before you move on to a new area.
A good base has a bed, a crafting table, a furnace, chests, and enough storage for your tools. Build walls and a roof with materials that are easy to replace. Add torches around the outside so hostile mobs cannot spawn nearby. Keep a farm for animals and crops, and a small mine for ores. Many players also build a portal room, a potion room, and a library for enchantments. Your base is your home, so keep it organized and easy to find.
Before you start a boss fight, check your checklist. Make sure you have full food, at least a few stacks of blocks, spare tools, extra arrows, healing potions, and a way back to your base. Write down your coordinates so you can find your way home. Preparation is the difference between a quick victory and losing hours of progress.

Redstone is Minecraft's wiring. Redstone dust carries a signal that weakens by one step per block, from power 15 down to 0. A lever or button turns a circuit on or off, and a redstone torch is always on until it receives power. A repeater boosts a signal and adds a short delay (1 to 4 ticks), and a comparator compares signals. Pistons push blocks when powered, which makes doors, traps, and hidden entrances possible.
Start small: wire a lever to a lamp, then try a button that opens a door with a piston. Test each circuit before you build it into your base.
Plan before you place blocks. Sketch the shape, pick two or three main materials, and build from a clear base line. Use symmetry for a clean look, and add details like windows, stairs, and trapdoors to break up flat walls. Light every area with torches, lanterns, or glowstone so hostile mobs cannot spawn. Press F3 to see your exact coordinates, which helps you copy and repeat your builds.
| Mob | Health | Drops | Where it spawns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zombie | 20 | Rotten flesh | Dark areas in the Overworld |
| Skeleton | 20 | Bones, arrows | Caves and dark areas |
| Creeper | 20 | Gunpowder | Dark areas in the Overworld |
| Spider | 16 | String | Dark areas, often in caves |
| Enderman | 40 | Ender pearls | Overworld, especially at night |
| Blaze | 20 | Blaze rods | Nether fortresses |
| Ghast | 10 | Ghast tears | Nether, in open spaces |
| Warden | 500 | Experience only | Deep Dark biome |
| Elder Guardian | 80 | Prismarine shards, sponges | Ocean monuments |
| Wither | 300 | Nether stars | Summoned by the player |
| Ender Dragon | 200 | Dragon egg, experience | The End |
Pick an item and a quantity to see the raw materials you need.
Each block in the Nether counts as 8 blocks in the Overworld, so use this to find your portal location. Height (Y) stays the same.
Build an enchanting table with 1 book, 2 diamonds, and 4 obsidian. Place up to 15 bookshelves around it, with a one-block gap so they count. Each enchantment costs experience levels and lapis lazuli. Higher bookshelf counts unlock stronger options. Sword enchantments such as Sharpness and Looting are great for boss fights, while Protection helps your armor last longer.
A villager picks up a profession when you place its job site block near it. For example, a lectern gives a librarian who sells enchanted books. Trades restock after a villager has traded enough, usually once per day. Keep villagers safe from zombies, since an infected villager can be cured but loses its trades. Iron golems in villages protect them, so build your trading hall near one.
Tick each boss as you defeat it. Your progress stays saved in this browser.

Y-level is the height in the world. These are the levels where each ore is most common in Java Edition 1.18 and later. Bedrock Edition is similar but can differ slightly.
